Whether you’ve skied for years or just starting out, here’s a handy guide to the different accommodation options for your ski holiday in Chatel:
The simplest and least expensive ski accommodation option is self catered, and in Chatel there’s a growing number of apartments and chalets available on this basis. Depending on the nationality of the owners, various items such as bedding, towels and cleaning may or may not be included in the price – always check!
Bear in mind that with self catered places you’ll need to arrange your airport transfers and getting about in-resort. In Chatel, there are a number of local transfer companies doing regular trips up and down the mountain and some offer individual seats if your group can’t fill a whole minibus.
A lot of the French owned apartments and chalets often have a lot of beds per square meter, so check the size of your accommodation to ensure it suits your group.
If you don’t have any kind of ‘rep’ in resort, it’s a good idea to ask your accommodation owner about getting lift passes, where to get equipment hire and who to contact for lessons.
For high quality self catered apartments try the new Chalets D’Angele residence.
Catered ski holidays offer a greater level of luxury, with chalet staff on-hand to cook your meals, clean your room, take you to the slopes and help you decide where to ski each day. In theory, everything should be taken care of so all you really need to worry about is whether you’d like a gin & tonic or glass of champagne for your pre-dinner tipple!
Across the Alps, catered chalets can obviously vary in standard and pricing, and with the rise of the ‘uber ski chalets’ in some resorts, a week’s skiing can set you back up to £100,000 (that’s not including food and drink!!!). Happily in Chatel, things haven’t reached those silly heights, and there’s a good choice of ‘affordable luxury’ options. As with all holidays, aim for the off peak times of the season such as mid January to get the best deals at catered chalets.
As well as gourmet catering (breakfast, afternoon tea, dinner and drinks) – most catered chalets offer a ‘concierge’ service to arrange ski lessons, equipment hire, childcare, and other requests during your stay. Check if airport transfers are included, as more and more chalets now add these on at an extra cost.
A chauffeured minibus in resort is generally included with catered chalets, but check that the service is flexible as opposed to a set time in the morning and a set time after skiing.
If you’re not sure what kind of chalet you’d like, try a site such as Chatel Ski Chalets who feature a large selection of chalets with various budgets, styles, and facilities to suit your needs.
Chatel has a good selection of hotels, mainly French operated (but English speaking) and ranging in star quality and offerings. Many have very traditional Savoyard style and heritage.
Hotel accommodation offers more flexibility if you’re only staying for a couple of nights – (most chalets – whether catered or self catered will only take week bookings during the winter). Pricing often begins with room only options, then B&B and half board.
If your hotel is situated outside the village centre consider opting for half board so your evening meals are included. Although there are some excellent restaurants in the village there are very few taxis, and hotels often don’t include the chauffeur service that a catered chalet would.
It’s unlikely that a hotel will organise your transfers, ski passes, equipment hire and lessons but it’s always worth asking.
Our favourite hotel in Chatel is the Fleur de Neige.
